DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person celebration to honor the life\, legacy\, and incredible impact of Dr. Woodie King\, Jr. on theater & culture! \n\n\n\n\nDefending the Light: A Celebration of Life and Legacy of Woodie King\, Jr. \nJoin Mind Your Business Art\, Wayne State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance\, and WSU – Organization of Black Alumni for a birthday celebration honoring the life\, legacy\, and enduring impact of Dr. Woodie King\, Jr.—visionary founder of New Federal Theatre\, Wayne State University alumnus\, Detroit cultural son\, and one of the most influential forces in Black theatre. \nThrough performance excerpts\, reflection\, video tributes\, and a community panel\, this event will honor King’s extraordinary role in cultivating artists\, developing audiences\, preserving Black stories\, and building stages where generations of Black artists could be seen\, heard\, and celebrated. \nFrom Detroit to New York and across the world\, Woodie King\, Jr. opened doors\, built institutions\, and reminded us that Black life—in all its beauty\, complexity\, struggle\, and brilliance—belongs at the center of American theatre. \nCome celebrate the birthday of the “Star-maker” whose light continues to guide us.
